We are inspired by bringing people together through food.

We want our projects and spaces to be inclusive of people from all backgrounds, diverse in output and places where people can come together and share their knowledge, skills, experience and culture.

  • During 2021, Team Canteen operated as a physical space at Breaking Bread (a largely outdoor socially distanced hospitality venue set up in response to Covid) where we offered a range of training and work opportunities for people under 25 and and others who may face barriers to access.

We opened two Kickstart placements working 25 hours each at the Team Canteen Kitchen. We appointed a mentor to support their progress in the hospitality industry and ensure that they felt integrated into the team.

During their time at Team Canteen the trainees worked under a range of established chefs to gain varied experience .  From KP duties to organising the kitchens, right through to creating dishes for service that day. After they had completed the placements, both trainees moved into permanent roles in kitchens across Bristol.

  • We worked with South Bristol Youth to support their ‘Insight into Apprenticeships’ programme that aims to highlight opportunities and to improve the self-confidence of students.  We welcomed Year 9 students from City Academy to visit Team Canteen at Breaking Bread. They took part in hands-on cooking workshops, tours of the site and Q&A sessions with some of our chefs, staff and directors discussing career pathways.

  • Team Canteen worked with Square Food Foundation to run training days as part of their ‘How to be a Chef’ programme. This is an established programme aimed at young people 16 - 25 years old who are not in employment, education or other training.  Find out more here.
